The Xylophone comes from Greek word; Xylon meaning “wood” and phone meaning “sound” or “voice” together achieving the definition of “wooden sound”.  This ancient instrument originated independently in Africa and Asia.  In 17th century, African instrumentalists took the xylophone with them to Central America where it was modified and became known as the marimba.  It was also used in European orchestra and also by jazz bands.  Even the famous classical music composer Shostakovich was particularly fond of this instrument and  it has prominent roles in many of his symphonies.

The xylophone is a very well-known and popular classroom resource around the world for assisting children with their development.  It teaches important musical skills such as the use of instruments, movement, singing and speech to develop children’s musical abilities.
